Cope

With the cookies cooling on the kitchen island, Cope headed upstairs to change into his ugly Christmas sweater for the party. He’d outdone himself this year. The sweater was red with sparkling white snowflakes. A shimmering golden ribbon wrapped around the middle of the sweater and from his neck to the hem. The ribbon tied into a bow, making Cope look like a giant Christmas present. A gift tag dangled down from the bow, which read, “To Jude.”

Cope knew he’d be absolutely irresistible to his husband. Speaking of Jude, where the hell was he? He was supposed to help Wolf change into his ugly sweater and then change into his own. “Jude?”

“Coming!” Jude’s voice floated from down the hall. His heavy footsteps followed a few seconds later. “I was getting Eagle into his sweater.”

“You got your grandfather an ugly Christmas sweater?” Cope asked.

“It seemed like a harmless way to get him into the season. He looks great, and so do you.” Jude whistled, motioning for Cope to spin around. “I’d like to unwrap you right now.” Jude pressed a kiss to Cope’s lips.

“I’d like to let you,” Cope agreed, wrapping his arms around Jude and kissing him back. With a five-year-old and an infant, they hadn’t been getting a lot of sexy time lately.

“EW!” Wolf hollered from the bedroom door. “Stop kissing. We have to get to the party! Grampa got Lizzie B all ready to go. Let’s get the show on the road! Chop! Chop!” Wolf dashed away. Seconds later, Jude heard him clomping his way down the stairs.

“He sounds just like you!” Cope hooted. “We’re always accusing Wolf of not listening to us, but he hears every word.” Pressing a kiss to Jude’s cheek, Cope headed for the door. “I’ll see you out there.”

“I’ll be a few minutes,” Jude said.

When Cope got downstairs, he saw Eagle had fitted Lizbet’s baby carrier to his chest. She bounced her legs and was cooing to herself. “You two are ready to go.”

“I’m interested in trying all the cookies,” Eagle said.

“Me too!” Wolf agreed, pulling on his winter hat. “And the hot chocolate and the peppermint bark and the cupcakes!”

Block party night was the one time a year when Cope didn’t insist on Wolf eating a decent meal before having dessert. He knew full well all the kids would be buzzed on sugar tonight, and so would he and Jude. “Okay, we’re ready to go.”

Cope held the door open, closing it behind him after Wolf and Eagle left the house. He took a minute to admire their street. It was strung with lights on every tree, with additional strands strung overhead like a winter pergola. Tables were set up with all kinds of Christmas treats, and there was a drink station serving mulled cider and hot chocolate. Neighbors stood together laughing while the kids darted from table to table, grabbing their favorite cookies.

“Hey, Cope!” Ten called from across the street. He was standing in front of a table with his gingerbread cookies displayed.
